I am one of the Test Engineers on the App-V (formerly SoftGrid) project.
Based on your speculation in this blog I created a PowerShell package (I virtualized PowerShell). I can tell you that everything appears to be working normally.

Thanks for the suggestion!

When you use the Application Link feature of ThinApp you don't even have to package it all together in 1 app.
My PowerShell+ package defines the .Net 2 and PowerShell V2CTP2 packages as RequiredAppLinks.

Makes it a lot easier on upgrades and patches.

+1 for a Microsoft Portable version. It would seem that all apps should be portable/green/virtualized/whatever. Reduced footprint when you don't need it, tools there when and where you do.

Great article. Thank you for sharing!

Just thinking about it. Thinstall lets you virtualize files such that the files are visible only from within the program in wraps. That means you should be able to put your scripts folder into the thinstalled exe and carry your utility scripts around with you.

This is a fantastic solution for consultants like me. There are times I want to use powershell on a client's system but don't want to mess with a .NET 2.0 install then the PowerShell install. Now I won't have to.

This is very cool. I should have thought of this a long time ago since I already own a Thinstall license. I also already have a clean XP virtual machine I use for testing so this should take very little time for me to set up. Thanks for figuring this out, it's gonna be really handy.

Karl,
Great ideas.. I've used Altiris for purposes before, but never thought of applying it to PowerShell.

Too bad we have to go this route to get a portable version. Hopefully the Microsoft team will pick up on this and take up your challenge to make PowerShell portable and redistributable.

Thanks!
